5 Things To Do Before Summer Break

Now that we’re nearing the end of the school year, are visions ofbeach chairs and margaritas dancing in your head?
Ok, so that's not really me. But yes, summer is just around the corner and I know we're all thinking about days at the pool. Even so, it’s never too early to start thinking about next school year. I know, I know... who wants to think about next year when this one isn’t even over?

Teachers love to enjoy their summer break, right? Come August, however, stress and panic set in. How will I get my classroom ready in time? Where are those posters I put away? Why am I not better organized? Help!

Wouldn’t it be nice to put some of those worries to rest even before your summer starts? Well, you can. I have created a list of things you can do NOW to make the start of the next school year stress-free. Even better, your students can help with some of these!

Think about all of the supplies you’ve used this year. Are you running short on any items? Do you wish you had more of something? Have your students create an inventory of items in your classroom, such as: markers, crayons, construction paper, glue, scissors, etc. Go ahead and order your supplies ahead of time so you’re not waiting for them in August or September. You can even get them organized into basket or bins. (Students LOVE to help with that!)

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that sets me back at school more than not having the copies I need. If I had the space and any sort of organizational system that worked, I'd make the entire year's worth of copies ahead of time. But alas, the best I can do is get the first few weeks ready ahead of time. This can be done at school (if you’re lucky) and it will save you a ton of time in the fall.

Think about the handouts and worksheets you need for at least the first month of school. What papers get sent home during the first few days? What will you use for morning work and homework? What about things like reading logs or behavior notes that you need all the time? Beat the lines at the copier in the fall and get it done now! With all your copies ready to go, just file them neatly in a “beginning of the year” drawer and they’ll be right at your fingertips when needed. {If you're super crazy organized, unlike me, you could even have labeled files for each stack of papers!}

How many times did an illness pop up and you were left unprepared this year? Save yourself a lot of stress and create next year’s sub folder now. While you can’t make your class list or seating chart just yet, you can add things like updated class rules, emergency procedures, and so forth. Put in extra worksheets and time fillers that can be used anytime of year.

Don't have a sub folder? Want something already put together? Here's one you might like...

Speaking of folders. here's one that should be at the top of your to-do list... student folders. You know, the ones they take home every day. Buy your folders and binders now. Get them all ready to go, so all you have to do in August is write your students' names on them. Don't forget to make a few extras for those late enrollments. While you're at it, make extra sets of the papers you put inside for new kids that arrive later in the year.

What goes in my folders? A zipper pouch (pencil case) to hold money and notes, the student agenda, important papers (like their math facts to study) and a plastic pocket page for homework like this...

You can have this year's students help assemble the folders for next year's group. By now they know what goes inside and in what order.

Last but not least... During the last few weeks of school, as you take down your classroom, why not just put up your Back to School board and new decorations? This task is a huge time-taker during pre-planning when you have so many other things to think about. Wouldn't it be nice to walk into an already decorated room when you return?

Not all schools will allow you to leave things on the walls over summer, but if yours does, take advantage! Get your students in on the fun too. They can help decorate, hang posters, and think of cool new ideas.

It is always best to be prepared for anything in life. As teachers, anything we can do to get ahead is so important. Rather than spend the last month of our summer vacations stressing, prepare NOW and enjoy that last month of freedom!

Classroom: 2015-16

It's the start of another school year! The classrooms at my school underwent some major renovations over the summer... new walls, new ceilings, and new workrooms. Instead of getting in a week early to set up, we had to wait for final inspection just three days before the kids showed up. Here is what my room looked like when I arrived for pre-planning...

And here is is today...

I'm pretty happy with how it looks considering I threw it together in three days! I switched from desks to tables this year. We'll see how that goes. I thought it would be better for labs, group work, and sharing manipulatives. I've got a class full of TALKERS though.... sigh.

5 Back-To-School Tips For Teachers

  1. Plan dinners for the first week back at school. - Okay, so that's kind of obvious, I know. But here's the real tip... Come up with five easy meals (Sunday through Thursday) that will also be great for leftovers the next day. Then you also have lunch for the entire first week! Getting up early for school is traumatic enough after a summer's worth of sleeping in. Having to make lunch too just adds to the pain. One of my favorite leftover meals is King Ranch Chicken. It's probably not the healthiest thing in the world but it is EASY and delicious (plus my kids like it and it's cheap.... BONUS). Here's the recipe I use: King Ranch Chicken. To make it even faster and easier, I cheat and buy a rotisserie chicken from the deli (shh...don't tell anyone).

  2. Put together your school "emergency kit". - What? Like for fire drills? No, that's not what I'm talking about. I keep a small tote bag in my closet full of little things I might need: aspirin, safety pins, deodorant (yeah, it's HOT down here in Florida!), mascara, mouthwash (for those really long days like Open House night), an extra house key, extra sunglasses, Tide-To-Go stain remover, and the all-important emergency chocolate bar. I usually have a pair of flip-flops in there too for when my shoes start to hurt or when I stay after school for awhile.

  3. Take a trip to Walmart. - Okay, I'm the first to admit announce that I hate Walmart. I seriously detest the place. In fact, I will happily pay 20% more just to shop somewhere else. However, there is one time I will venture into the depths of Hell-mart... back to school time. Here's why: When the kids bring in 80 packs of those super cheap pencils or several dozen paper pocket folders without prongs, Walmart will let you exchange them without a receipt (as long as they aren't Office Depot brand or something). Now, if you're anything like me, you will end up with an entire shopping cart full of unwanted supplies. So, I strongly suggest that you either call ahead or better yet, go in and talk to the manager while wearing your school badge in a prominent spot. Explain the dilemma of receiving so many unwanted supplies and how it would be so beneficial to your students to be able to exchange them for things they actually need. I've never been turned down.

  4. Use your phone in class. - No, do not text your husband ten times to say how you wish summer had been just a month or two longer. You know how easy it is to get off schedule the first few days of school? How many times have you been deep in discussion about reporting vs. tattling only to discover that special area started 10 minutes ago? It happens! So before the first day of school, set your phone to alert you to those transition times.

  5. Create new student bags. - One of the most disruptive things to an otherwise smooth school day is a new student coming in. Not that I don't like new students, but if I'm not prepared, my day goes completely off track. A good way to keep things rolling is to prepare a bunch of "new student bags". These include all of the essentials that I normally give students during the first couple days of school: homework folder, supply list, parent letter, student info sheet, folders for reading and math, desk tag, etc. When the new student arrives, I pull out a bag and everything is there. What a lifesaver!

Back to School Freebie

Tomorrow starts the third week of school for us. My plan was to loop up with my class and have tons of free time since they already know what to do and we could skip all of the getting-to-know-you stuff. Well, all of that has happened except for the tons of free time part. What is up with the first month of school? Seriously...should it be this exhausting? Look, I'm so tired I couldn't even think of a good title for this post. So, let's just get to it...

Here is a back-to-school freebie for all of my fellow exhausted teachers. Enjoy!

If you haven't started back to school yet, I wish you a great first week! Don't forget to hop on over to Classroom Freebie for more...classroom freebies!

School Day Preppers Part 2

Last week I laid out my back-to-school plans. Let's see how I did with that...
  • HORSE Folders - half done
  • Back to School Letter - half done
  • Nails - CHECK
  • Freezer Meals - fail
  • Meet the Teacher posters - CHECK
Okay, not too impressive. I think I do better when time's almost up, so this week should really be stellar for me! Here's my new to-do list...

CENTER FOLDERS - I found this idea on Pinterest and it's brilliant! I get so frustrated with my students' center folders. They are always such a mess, crammed with papers - some finished, some not. So I'm going to make these folders so they can have finished work in the front and unfinished in the back. Nice and orderly...YES!

To make these little gems, you take a standard paper pocket folder without prongs. Fold it inside-out and hole punch the open edges. Then, fasten it inside a second folder that does have prongs. Isn't that insanely smart?

PENCILS - This is another Pinterest find. I figure if I just use other people's ideas, it'll save me a lot of effort. I have tried SO MANY pencil management techniques and they never work out the way I envisioned. Why can't 7 and 8-year olds keep track of their pencils? The floor can be littered with them and my kids will still say they can't find a pencil. This idea is going to solve that... I just know it! The last one left with their pencil is the winner...of something.

READ - I have very little relaxation time left; 9 days to be exact. I really have to get some "me time" in (I hate that phrase, but whatever). This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE book!! I'm not actually a Ken Follett fan. His usual offerings aren't my type of book. In fact, I don't generally like fiction that much. However, this book is divine. It's actually the sequel to Pillars of the Earth which I loved as well. But I read this one first (which you can do since each book can stand on its own) and I think it was slightly better. I don't want to give the plot away, so you can read about it on Amazon if you want. But I will say that with over 1,000 pages, it's the longest book I've ever read and I couldn't put it down. I've been waiting and waiting to forget enough of it to read it again and that's just what I plan to do starting tomorrow! I looooooove this book!

NO NAME BOARD - If anything is worse than mysteriously missing pencils, it's papers with no name! Come on people, haven't you been doing this since kindergarten? Next week I am making this no name board or a variation of it. If they insist on forgetting their names, at least I'll have a cute spot to display the papers.

TPT's BACK TO SCHOOL SALE - Last but not least, I'll be shopping for some awesome resources during the big sale (and hopefully selling some too!). I've got a long list of things I want to buy, especially clip art and science stuff. I'm pretty sure I'll accomplish this part of my to-do list!

Back to School... Getting Ready

They say time goes by faster as you get older. If you're a teacher, time goes by faster as the weather gets hotter. It's a strange phenomenon that I like to call the "Evil Summer Time Warp". Can it possibly be the end of July already? Come on, people!!

Okay, okay, so I need to do a little back-to-school planning. Have you ever seen the show Doomsday Preppers? Well that's normally what I'm like by late July.... a little bit overzealous and slightly crazy and misguided.  Instead of planning for the immediate and probable future, I start worrying about what I'll do next March when my class has spring fever.  I could probably have my own show called...

I'm really going to try to focus on actual back-to-school stuff this year. So, here it is... 5 things I'm doing THIS WEEK to get ready, announced publicly so I actually have to do them...

  •  HORSE Folders - Last year I used a variation of Christina Bainbridge's HORSE folders. I added a few extras like a vinyl pocket for test papers and other things I need parents to see and also a data section for student to track their progress on standards. THIS WEEK I will buy sticker labels and print them for my folders. If you don't know about Christina's folders, you can check them out here.
  • Back to School Letter - Normally I spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to craft the perfect letter to parents. The one from the previous year never seems to suffice. But this year, THIS WEEK, I will write my letter and get it done quickly. Want to know why? Because I'm looping with my class and that means they already know all of my rules and procedures. Woo-hoo! My letter will be a brief welcome back and reminder about a few things. Done!
  •  Nails - That's right, as in fingernails. THIS WEEK I am getting my nails done. This counts, you know. You can't start school with bad nails and mine are bad! All this stress I've had trying to sell one house and buy another has ruined my manicure. This must be remedied before school starts!
  •  School Night Dinners - I'm sure I'll be revisiting this topic throughout the year because it's my personal nemesis. I can never seem to figure out dinner. I don't plan ahead and then I end up getting take-out way more often than any respectable person should. So THIS WEEK I am going to compile a list of easy to make dinners, crock pot recipes, and freezer meals. I'm going to start here with my personal hero of the kitchen... The Pioneer Woman: Freezer Cooking!
  • Meet the Teacher - Unlike my usual back-to-school letter that takes weeks for me to craft, I put absolutely no thought into Meet The Teacher day. In fact, I normally arrive at school that morning in total shock that people will be coming into my room and appalled that my fellow teachers have laid out lovely spreads of cookies and juice and cute little goodie bags. But not this year, no sir! The wonderful thing is that these people have actually already met me numerous times (looping, remember), so they won't be surprised when I'm ill-prepared. However, THIS WEEK I am printing out all the cute little meet-the-teacher signs I made. I think the parents might faint when they see how organized I appear. It will be an illusion, but shocking nonetheless. Take a look...
