<br />
Huh? Boom Cards? What's that? We all know what task cards are and how many ways they can be used in the classroom. Well now your students can use them online, through the Boom Learning app. Boom Cards are interactive task cards that play on any device.<br />
<br />
Kids love them because they earn badges and rewards for completing tasks. Teachers love them because...<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>They are self-checking! </li>
<li>No printing!</li>
<li>No cutting!</li>
<li>No laminating!</li>
<li>Access to teacher reports to track student progress!</li>
</ol>
<br />

If you want to see what all the fuss is about, just head on over to my TpT store and download a preview. The preview includes a playable sample. Just click the picture below:</div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Now
that we’re nearing the end of the school year, are visions ofbeach chairs and
margaritas dancing in your head? </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNlrYHM_IUm_7-P0_Ker6czb-2eOt7E8EWzRU1jLx-mQKmwthQNpqm-SdUb2bvK4lrq4GYr__bqS4nBPRcXSqkVIhyRbSombkB5NQTJ9Uk5Ku8334OBxh152kNwIE0aa2MP9SMP9Rrehk/s1600/0o1a3713-1193.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNlrYHM_IUm_7-P0_Ker6czb-2eOt7E8EWzRU1jLx-mQKmwthQNpqm-SdUb2bvK4lrq4GYr__bqS4nBPRcXSqkVIhyRbSombkB5NQTJ9Uk5Ku8334OBxh152kNwIE0aa2MP9SMP9Rrehk/s400/0o1a3713-1193.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Ok, so that's not really me. But yes, summer is just around the corner and I know we're all thinking about days at the pool. </span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Even so, it’s never too early to start thinking about next school year. I know, I
know... who wants to think about next year when this one isn’t even over?</span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Teachers
love to enjoy their summer break, right? Come August, however, stress and
panic set in. How will I get my classroom ready in time? Where are those
posters I put away? Why am I not better organized? Help!</span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Wouldn’t
it be nice to put some of those worries to rest even before your summer starts? Well, you can. I have created a list of things you can do NOW to make the start of the next
school year stress-free. Even better, your students can help with some of
these! </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Think about all of the
supplies you’ve used this year. Are you running short on any items? Do you wish you
had more of something? Have your students create an inventory of items in your
classroom, such as: markers, crayons, construction paper, glue, scissors, etc.
Go ahead and order your supplies ahead of time so you’re not waiting for them in
August or September. You can even get them organized into basket or bins. (Students LOVE to help with that!) </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that sets me back at school more than not having the copies I need. If I had the space and any sort of organizational system that worked, I'd make the entire year's worth of copies ahead of time. But alas, the best I can do is get the first few weeks ready ahead of time. This can be done at school (if you’re lucky) and it will save you a ton
of time in the fall. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Think about the handouts and worksheets you need for at
least the first month of school. What papers get sent home during the first few
days? What will you use for morning work and homework? What about things like reading logs or behavior notes that you need all the time? Beat the lines at the copier in the fall and get it done now! With all
your copies ready to go, just file them neatly in a “beginning of the year”
drawer and they’ll be right at your fingertips when needed. {If you're super crazy organized, unlike me, you could even have labeled files for each stack of papers!}</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">How many times did an illness pop up and you were left unprepared this
year? Save yourself a lot of stress and create next year’s sub folder now. While you can’t make your class list
or seating chart just yet, you can add things like updated class rules,
emergency procedures, and so forth. Put in extra worksheets and time
fillers that can be used anytime of year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Speaking of folders. here's one that should be at the top of your to-do list... student folders. You know, the ones they take home every day. Buy
your folders and binders now. Get them all ready to go, so all you have to do in August is write your students' names on them. Don't forget to make a few extras for those late enrollments. While you're at it, make extra sets of the papers you put inside for new kids that arrive later in the year. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">You can have this year's students help assemble the folders for next year's group. By now they know what goes inside and in what order.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Last but not least... During the last few weeks of school, as you take down</span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;"> your
classroom, why not just put up your Back to School board and new decorations?
This task is a huge time-taker during pre-planning when you have so many other things to think about. Wouldn't it be nice to walk into an already decorated room when you return? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 14pt;">Not all schools will allow you to leave things on the walls over summer, but if yours does, take advantage! Get your students in on the fun too. They can help decorate, hang posters,
and think of cool new ideas. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">As
an elementary teacher, one of the most important skills I can teach my students
is how to read, write and spell. The use of word work in my classroom is
essential, even in the upper elementary grades. Word work is when students
practice spelling, vocabulary, frequently used words and word parts like
prefixes, suffixes, and roots. This helps them continue to grow as young
readers and writers.</span></div>
<div style="direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0in; margin-top: 0pt; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;">

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">In
order to keep your students interested and engaged, you have to find
age-appropriate word work activities that they will enjoy. A fourth grader most
likely will not appreciate </span></span><b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: red;">r</span><span style="color: orange;">a</span><span style="color: #ffd966;">i</span><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #6aa84f;">n</span></span><span style="color: #3d85c6;">b</span><span style="color: #674ea7;">o</span><span style="color: #741b47;">w</span></b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">spelling the way a first grader would. In
contrast, solving vocabulary puzzles would be an excellent choice for older
students. I like to incorporate word work in my third grade classroom during
centers and reading groups. During centers, they often independently practice a
skill that we have worked on during reading group.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">One
really important skill for understanding language is the ability to break words
down into their individual parts to extract the meaning. This requires
instruction in word analysis: specifically prefixes, suffixes, and Green and
Latin roots. When students understand the individual parts of a word, they are
much more successful at determining the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.</span></span><br />

Crossword Bulletin Board:</b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;"> Laminate squares of blank paper (so they can be used
over and over again) and use them to create a giant crossword grid on your
bulletin board. Post the clues about your weekly vocabulary words next to the
grid. For example, if one of your vocabulary words was "pointless",
then 1 across might say "Having no purpose". Students can record
their answers on their response sheets or you can have them write their answers
on the grid using dry erase markers.</span></li>

<li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;"><b>Scrabble
Spelling:</b> Older students don't often like to practice their spelling words. One
way to add some fun is to turn it into a game. Scrabble tiles work great for
this. Put all of the tiles into a bag or box. Each student should also have
their spelling list handy. They take turns pulling a tile from the bag. If they
can use it to build a spelling word, they keep it. If not, it gets set aside.
Keep pulling tiles until they are all used up. Any completed words get scored
by adding the points on the tiles used. Incomplete words do not count. The
person with the highest score wins</span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">.</span></li>

<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;"><b>Word
Sorts for Big Kids: </b>Word sorting is typically a primary grades activity but it
can work for intermediate too. There are plenty of advanced spelling patterns
that lend themselves well to word sorting. One example is the "shun"
sound. The </span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">tion</span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">, </span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">sion</span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">, and
</span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">cian</span><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">
patterns are confusing and take a lot of practice.</span></li>

Challenge: </b><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 12pt;">Since students love competition, this game is perfect! With a

possible to beat their partner. This game is strictly for spelling practice but it sure is fun! </span></li>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">While
word work is essential for the younger grades, it is important to keep
reinforcing spelling and vocabulary skills as our students progress. Students
will enjoy games and group</span></span><span style="font-family: "calibri"; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">activities that increase their knowledge of words
beyond just how to spell them. I hope you and your students find these ideas

Without mentioning any names, I will say I have one of the most exhausting classes ever this year. Not only do they talk a lot, they blurt out, get up and wander around, announce loudly how bored they are, refuse to work with others in a nice way, and pretty much complain all day long. Now this isn't my entire class, of course. It's a small handful that makes it feel like the whole class is out to get me. I know you've had years like this too. We all do.<img src="IMAGEURL" style="display: none;" /><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So what's a worn out teacher to do when spring break is still a few weeks away but your sanity ran out a few weeks ago? Let's look at a few of the problems going on in my class right now and some tips that are actually helping me make it through the days, the long long long days...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<img border="0" height="123" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHcOgdnIBFYdkMCoUVOP9RJnEobAP1kgdVb92XzT2uuYcckmc6fV1qSwxHA84GFyGrDqHNJp6wZOMeYvUeRn-Z_QBbVo5noSOYZottqvW-hmI_CPXdUcCePmRy-99XavqVKUc2yPXWvHw/s640/a.png" width="640" />You know the one. Mine comes in the door talking... to everyone, to no one, to himself, to the walls. It doesn't matter if anyone is listening or not. It doesn't matter if I'm already talking or not. His mouth runs... all... day... long. No amount of discipline stops it because his mouth actually has a will of its own and that will is VERY strong. This type of child will drive an introverted teacher like me (yes, we exist) absolutely crazy. Temporary solutions...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #674ea7; font-size: x-large;"><b>Music, Gum, and Headphones</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First put on some appealing music. I like the kids radio station on Pandora. This will divert the talker's attention from his own never-ending dialogue to some other sound. If he talks, he hears himself instead of the music. If he talks, the rest of the class hears him instead of the music. Peer pressure is very powerful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, pass out some gum. It's harder to talk with gum in your mouth. Then, you can institute the "Loose Lips" rule... If you talk with gum in your mouth, I take it away. If I see any evidence of gum sticking out of your lips, I take it away. Believe me, losing your gum is so so sad to a third grader. Sometimes I do the gum at the same time as the music. But don't use it too often or your class becomes way too fun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last, pull out the headphones for the Super Talker. For some strange reason, if he can't hear other people talking, he somehow thinks they can't hear him either. The headphones only work for short periods though. They are especially good during a test because they also help Super Talker focus on what's in front of him.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If all of the above fails, pull out "The Note" and send your little talker on a very important errand:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjctibzkwdPNn6OAZiJsGzX-GBw4jEkX2UP0Dl7tIL0wevdFqVoMew9sZfvFxI8i0huj8T3ehWykOOWfx_K2BjrHIgaYG95VikvLpjeTBJOzQ5zA2TmJXtfiphx_cq9_K7iYWvF7rYD58U/s1600/note.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjctibzkwdPNn6OAZiJsGzX-GBw4jEkX2UP0Dl7tIL0wevdFqVoMew9sZfvFxI8i0huj8T3ehWykOOWfx_K2BjrHIgaYG95VikvLpjeTBJOzQ5zA2TmJXtfiphx_cq9_K7iYWvF7rYD58U/s320/note.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Don't all teachers need a <span style="color: red; font-size: large;"><b>B</b></span>ig <span style="color: red; font-size: large;"><b>R</b></span>ed <span style="color: red; font-size: large;"><b>E</b></span>raser <span style="color: red; font-size: large;"><b>A</b></span>nd <span style="color: red; font-size: large;"><b>K</b></span>eys sometimes? If the other teacher is a good friend, she'll take a long time finding what you need {wink wink}.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXEdF_dh-gh63gi7hQVRDeNlMPXgXCLGFstDozuxYGAmrx0IwTYgyHq4p22fH3mKleDqke6yws_kjKCDiE9B7CH4HSwGMjOD3b8G2z1hR8Xbg20HClW2gzNq53KytvQfakk4PST5n2dtw/s1600/a.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXEdF_dh-gh63gi7hQVRDeNlMPXgXCLGFstDozuxYGAmrx0IwTYgyHq4p22fH3mKleDqke6yws_kjKCDiE9B7CH4HSwGMjOD3b8G2z1hR8Xbg20HClW2gzNq53KytvQfakk4PST5n2dtw/s640/a.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This student is particularly aggravating. She's the one who refuses to work with anyone. When forced to, the sabotage begins... and it's always someone else's fault. As a result, none of the other students want to work with her either. Every group or partner activity turns into an unproductive complain-fest. This is a tough problem to solve because it involves negative attention-seeking behavior... the worst kind in my opinion. So, what to do?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #674ea7; font-size: x-large;"><b>The Bigger, Better Deal</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's how it works: Announce to the class that today you will be picking partners. Then write two things on the board...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZTUPPHEiXqBNiE7yAOrPAJ_l8Aa-f7j21-OwUDFuU4wtAoTw1DYS_m0ycA0fJ8LhyphenhyphenDwivMt3c1HXu-g8kUVkAcOiN-uU_EsfPdrxbTAvDkn85Bs9v7OS6GmN8X7jG_qKL_kzasJv4vgg/s1600/b.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZTUPPHEiXqBNiE7yAOrPAJ_l8Aa-f7j21-OwUDFuU4wtAoTw1DYS_m0ycA0fJ8LhyphenhyphenDwivMt3c1HXu-g8kUVkAcOiN-uU_EsfPdrxbTAvDkn85Bs9v7OS6GmN8X7jG_qKL_kzasJv4vgg/s640/b.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fill in the blank with something the Lone Wolf really likes. In my case, it's the computer. So I would fill in "10 minutes of technology". This solution works because it gives everyone an incentive to work cooperatively. They ALL want to pick their own partners and the Lone Wolf really wants that computer time. (If that's not enough for your little loner, pull her aside and let her know that if she does well this time, next time she can choose to work alone.) The beauty of the bigger, better deal is that it's self-perpetuating. Every time they do partner work, the deal is still the same and they are in charge of the outcome.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzeB4RekURJlStS6RrFWf2yplJoc7apbNV6RhDWswNFiWd7lr7bUcOrPMfZk1L9bIObOgdS7xozaW_lbDGpR0TNMu3KuHJGLJkx2dyKgx7Cbh1QdjsIHMbBdB2vTjK1rQ9DFUVlSTEY2M/s1600/a.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="106" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzeB4RekURJlStS6RrFWf2yplJoc7apbNV6RhDWswNFiWd7lr7bUcOrPMfZk1L9bIObOgdS7xozaW_lbDGpR0TNMu3KuHJGLJkx2dyKgx7Cbh1QdjsIHMbBdB2vTjK1rQ9DFUVlSTEY2M/s640/a.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I actually have three Wendy Whiners this year. No matter what we're doing, it's boring, stupid, or too much work and they feel entitled to announce these feelings to the whole class. I also have one who lets his mouth hang open in utter shock whenever a test is announced. So for these students, I have instituted what I like to call...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b style="color: #674ea7; font-size: xx-large;">Bonus Questions</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now "bonus questions" sounds like a good thing, but it's definitely not. It goes like this... If you smile and accept your assignment without complaining, you get the short version. If you whine or complain about your assignment, you get the "bonus questions" (i.e. the long version). This is an all-or-nothing incentive. One person whining means the whole class gets the bonus questions. There are two reasons for this: 1) peer pressure and 2) there really is no long version of the assignment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wouldn't normally encourage tricking small children like this, but desperate times call for desperate measures. No matter what they do, they're going to get the same assignment... but they don't know that. The affect is that the whiners do NOT, under any circumstance, want more work. So they will bite their tongues and keep their complaining to themselves just to keep the assignment as short as possible. What they don't know won't hurt them and they'll think they are being rewarded for a positive attitude. In return, you get students who accept the assignment without a battle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, if spring break would just hurry up and get here....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL='http://www.fishyrobb.com/single-post/Why-Use-Games-to-Teach-Math'" />
<!--StartFragment-->
</head>
<div>
How often do your students play games during math? Do you bring them out on special occasions only? Maybe Fun Friday? Here are five reasons games should be a regular part of your math instruction:</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li><b><span style="color: #e06666;">Computational Fluency</span></b>: This is something we want all of our students to have. A lack of fluency can become a serious impediment to performance in math. When all of a student's effort is spent on figuring out basic facts, they cannot focus on the real work of math which is problem solving. There are MANY games out there that build fluency. One of my favorite store-bought ones is <a href="http://amzn.to/2k5Ly9j" target="_blank">Sumoku</a>. It's great for practicing repeated addition and building multiplication skills.</li>
<br />
<li><b><span style="color: #e06666;">Strategic Thinking</span></b>: One of our goals as math teachers is to teach students to problem solve in multiple ways. Thinking strategically and choosing the most efficient way to solve a problem takes a lot of practice. When engaged in playing a game, students will do this naturally without even realizing that it's happening. One my students' favorite games for the past three years has been <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Money-Game-Counting-Money-The-Grocery-Game-1081053" target="_blank">The Grocery Game</a>. To play, they must fill their grocery bags while staying within their budget and having as much money left over as possible. This requires not only addition and subtraction, but planning, estimation, and strategy. Here is a picture of my students playing this game:</li>
<br /><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Money-Game-Counting-Money-The-Grocery-Game-1081053?aref=56qwccsv" target="_blank"><img alt="" border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0QQ3eU0p9ROBYaWOcuk5wE49xAEAJdOiUAFAygS5omist_-ubbp5CKoKC2wTopi5lcarj2_XbCnRZFpIHw9h3C4Gj5NlMfVMQGPIcT3chkuiPHsSbSgLemsPBL_46oZGHxxy7Fyvp0KY/s320/IMG_0326.JPG" title="The Grocery Game - Counting Money" width="320" /></a><br /><br />
<li><b><span style="color: #e06666;">Real-world Connection</span></b>: Want to make your math instruction meaningful? Then use games! One of my favorite things to do is have a guided whole group lesson and then bring out a game at the end that uses the same skill. Then, they get to play the game with their friends! Sometimes they can borrow my game to take home and play with their family! See, math isn't just for the classroom. It isn't something that you just sit and do on paper. There are many games available that teach real-life math skills (see The Grocery Game in #2). Want a really fun homework assignment? Tell your students go home and play a game of darts (lots of addition!) or anything else that requires keeping score. Or have them run sprints and then calculate their average time. There are so many ways math is incorporated into everyday life.</li>
<br />
<li><b><span style="color: #e06666;">Student-Driven</span></b>: What sounds more fun: solving problems your teacher came up with or playing a game with your friends? As awesome as you think you are, I promise that your students would rather play the game. Know why? Because they're in charge. They are choosing who goes first. They are drawing the cards and asking the questions, They are determining who wins. When students are in charge of their own learning, magic happens. Enough said.</li>
<br />
<li><b><span style="color: #e06666;">Motivation</span></b>: One of the best reasons to use games (maybe THE best) is that it motivates kids to do math. Many children (and some adults) don't get why math is important and no amount of telling them will make them think otherwise. By using games, you are giving those kids a reason to do math. Not because you said so, not because it's part of school, but because it's part of an activity that has personal meaning. Even the most reluctant math students will join in when you bring out the games and they're almost always excited to do so!</li>
</ol>

<a href="https://s3.amazonaws.com/ekip-prod/img/logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/ekip-prod/img/logo.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I just have to share this awesome offer but it's only for 4th graders. The U.S. Government is offering every fourth grader free passes to U.S. national parks! All you have to do, as a teacher, is register on the website and print the passes. No strings attached, nothing else to do. How great is that?<img src="IMAGEURL" style="display: none;" /><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You can get passes for your students here: <a href="https://www.everykidinapark.gov/" target="_blank">Every Kid In A Park</a></div>

You see, I bought a really great electric sharpener from a catalog. It had awesome reviews and was supposed to stand up to really heavy use. Supposed to... key words there. The problem is that a classroom full of students who will stick anything (such as crayons, paper clips, and even scissors) into the sharpener is a different level of "heavy use" than these manufacturers are referring to.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Within about 3 months, it was groaning and grinding and sounding like it was ready to die. Every time I sharpened one of the cheap pencils (You know the ones I'm talking about), the leads would just fall out. The thing was so noisy, I banned the students from using it at all during the school day. My dreams of a constant supply of sharp pencils at the ready were over and I gave up trying to find the perfect pencil sharpener. I even started this school year out with nothing. For the first two weeks, I relied on the supply of pre-sharpened pencils some of the kids had brought in.<img src="IMAGEURL" style="display: none;" /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then, this came in the mail....</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://classroomfriendlysupplies.refersion.com/c/7440/5238" target="_blank"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyHQqXS0atnGe_xcpo8wkP3V5bxcNMeJ6uK-VFOZsbGDOb_5CdYBFMclFu-B_vIb_FOhBLZEc9iyqtVXGqmNKHE9-PdAvuEuPQFcdoCozmwNoTiXLE5gYuI_Nx5vwsrb6ODpnJmUxSyTU/s640/IMG_0724.jpg" title="classroom friendly supplies pencil sharpener" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now, I am not one to write product reviews (unless I really HATE something and feel that the world needs to know). But <a href="https://classroomfriendlysupplies.refersion.com/c/7440/5238" target="_blank">this sharpener</a> has changed my life! Yeah, really... at least my life between the hours of 7:30 am and 2:30 pm.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
First off, yes it is a manual sharpener. Let's get that out of the way. But don't worry... this is not like the manual sharpeners you're accustomed to. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first thing I thought when I opened the box was, "Hmm, nice color." (It actually comes in a lot of colors - take your pick!) Blue matches my classroom. The next thing I thought was, "No way this is going to be better than an electric." I mean who wants a line of kids standing and waiting to sharpen their pencils, right? Boy, was I wrong.<br />
<ol>
<li>This sharpener is FAST. A couple of turns (as in 2 or 3) and you're done.</li>
<li>This sharpener is QUIET. Barely any sound at all.</li>
</ol>
</div>
<div>
Using this sharpener is a little bit different than any other kind. You don't just stick the pencil in and start turning. Here's a quick video from Classroom Friendly Supplies that shows how it works...<br />
<br />
<div style="height: 0; padding-bottom: 75%; position: relative;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VsP_SIkiXS0" style="height: 100%; left: 0; position: absolute; width: 100%;"></iframe></div>
<br />
Looks easy, right? It is! My third graders have no problem using it at all. Now the video shows the pencil being sharpened until the guide plate goes all the way in but this really isn't necessary. Just a couple of turns produces perfectly sharpened points...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitWgCV-Fz6Xhlpr3fMbFYwPvumabY4m4qxA5z4RGGfi1x-GlZ9o4kxKjBjG7yqiXuyF4iKboIigc8c_qY0YRqzMMMsGOMVO6iNJOxgBjGytqDz4pL9hVhu-9g1N1nfsYWGkmSzUh9KPYw/s1600/b.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="128" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitWgCV-Fz6Xhlpr3fMbFYwPvumabY4m4qxA5z4RGGfi1x-GlZ9o4kxKjBjG7yqiXuyF4iKboIigc8c_qY0YRqzMMMsGOMVO6iNJOxgBjGytqDz4pL9hVhu-9g1N1nfsYWGkmSzUh9KPYw/s640/b.png" title="best classroom pencil sharpener" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I am able to sharpen a full pack of pencils in the same amount of time that it took me with my electric sharpener with none of the problems (like loose lead and gnawed up looking wood).<br />
<br />
So where can you get one of these lovelies for yourself? Go to ClassroomFriendlySupplies.com or click the image below:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://classroomfriendlysupplies.refersion.com/c/7440/5238" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0148/9147/t/41/assets/logo.png?6352870097023070901" height="73" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
They are super affordable (way less than a "good" electric one) and you get to choose your color. I highly recommend this company!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wow, back to school time already! I can hardly believe it. Summer really flew by and my family is in the middle of moving to a new house right now (during the first week of school!!!). So instead of my usual month of obsessive pre-planning, I've been packing and living out of boxes. Yes, it's insane, I know. I actually considered going into full panic mode today. But then I decided it would be better to to take a deep breath, pray, and focus on just one little thing at a time. Whew!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, today my goal is to get my Friday folders ready. Sending papers home used to be a real pain in the you-know-what. Sorting them into student mailboxes every day, getting them from the mailboxes into the students' folders on Friday afternoon, and then into backpacks seemed like a monumental task or at least a never-ending one. But I've come up with a system that really works and is absolutely ZERO work for me. My students do it all. What was that? No work, students do it all, tell me more!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, I got some <a href="http://amzn.to/2aO5cAI" target="_blank">plastic envelopes</a> like these...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://amzn.to/2aO5cAI" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7x9zSq1FkcAU3pnWK_C8ANGNOwUuxPCScjSjxRUosF6kQACYQT5gxQ1lVUYpj_axupnRE5RE6m-NK9R9bjqMNanUgnVnscQSnOLq4kkEe6Fnl1XXMivjeKh9i420_IvM0go1qjUgBbzg/s320/81qwPHlZv%252BL._SL1500_.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These particular ones from Amazon are a little pricey but they last all year and never fall apart. Even the little snaps kept working. In fact, they held up so well, I was able to save about half of them to reuse this year (unheard of!). See, here are some left over from last year. They still look pretty good...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH-d1QkcbpOWDaDyq0a-j5dFcMAtghmu7ulBNZRgFyW7zvVYIK7vrATIw5nMj0A9LKvee06vXA2ms3bLEr4I06FXeBwuRCC94A0g2z7E-_j2qW3b1eN4Cg6hbPI84DmJ4aMliuD2YrxHY/s1600/IMG_0680.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH-d1QkcbpOWDaDyq0a-j5dFcMAtghmu7ulBNZRgFyW7zvVYIK7vrATIw5nMj0A9LKvee06vXA2ms3bLEr4I06FXeBwuRCC94A0g2z7E-_j2qW3b1eN4Cg6hbPI84DmJ4aMliuD2YrxHY/s320/IMG_0680.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, I get hanging files and put them in plastic crate like this...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPfYEJKlj58k1kES8LeLMy74woIezyL7i-P4fAS4Gr5Aszwx_6U94a_tt23WB-R7ZYwCdbCn8A7S9wkDI5kRHNQRFzdf1UPBvhvsLS0nr2wxExw19-jdCPvO1mHONnUXIZEB7yJH0YCoM/s1600/IMG_0681.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPfYEJKlj58k1kES8LeLMy74woIezyL7i-P4fAS4Gr5Aszwx_6U94a_tt23WB-R7ZYwCdbCn8A7S9wkDI5kRHNQRFzdf1UPBvhvsLS0nr2wxExw19-jdCPvO1mHONnUXIZEB7yJH0YCoM/s320/IMG_0681.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have one file for each student. These don't have names on them yet because I don't have my final class list.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, here's where the zero work for teacher comes in. I keep a paper tray next to my Friday folders where I toss all of my graded papers and things to send home. The stack just keeps growing, but I don't care because students will take care of it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoSdj3NI6VNWxxUCJnJ7g4Ue3nTkbu1SB7aeU5zQpeKan_kr-96QlZwo3XwLM10mMIBzWc8EDGhMZ1gAkhobm4PJ0LQjZzFffIqNysVndUBPSl5Nl93R6BgMqHnur-Lkf-umD41QgjZws/s1600/job.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="337" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoSdj3NI6VNWxxUCJnJ7g4Ue3nTkbu1SB7aeU5zQpeKan_kr-96QlZwo3XwLM10mMIBzWc8EDGhMZ1gAkhobm4PJ0LQjZzFffIqNysVndUBPSl5Nl93R6BgMqHnur-Lkf-umD41QgjZws/s640/job.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are the two most important jobs in my classroom. The paper filer checks the paper tray every day and files all of the papers into the hanging files. He or she does this whenever there's some free time, when their work is finished early, or sometimes in the morning before the bell rings. Then on Friday, my Friday Folders person takes the papers out of each student's file, puts them into their envelopes, and passes them out to go home. Totally painless!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I don't just send these folders home and hope the parents look in them. Inside each one is a parent log sheet. Parents sign off that they looked at their child's papers and then send the folder back in on Monday. The log sheet looks like this...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Friday-Folder-Parent-Signature-Log-FREEBIE-2727112" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdyCnhCDsasRcQdN2CDl09nNWcv539tue4ul63JHN8HZ3vwXx6SNUiElMF-GIcXPIf9jmQ0g55IY-Km7UBU2OdE_393zrrCQWJ7IC7eUlaElYte0PX9QR0QHERrJkP73kKSK658Yn-Xhk/s400/Slide1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Download an editable version <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Friday-Folder-Parent-Signature-Log-FREEBIE-2727112" target="_blank">HERE</a>.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I fill in all the Friday dates for the year so I never have to think about it again. The log just stays in the Friday folder. And since the folders are transparent, I don't even have to open them to see if it was signed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I just can't figure out what to do with my room. I don't like distraction and clutter and lots of stuff. Most of the other teachers have cute themes in their rooms but it's visual overload to me. So my room tends to look pretty plain and dare I say, boring, compared to everyone else's. <img src="IMAGEURL" style="display: none;" /><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So far this is what I've got...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7DIPmPLLVdFL0U8oL0DjfpmDeY55rEo_OqNHqeh5wf6XkiFxZJ7vIgWvU22u0UkjG-T3vzWx1k3Ns8z6-nXoG8aT1DPQkXaEaRBNY-2CM8mv06BjF6tqBMzRq9q_vmu__sQJzdukFSaM/s1600/IMG_0596.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="387" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7DIPmPLLVdFL0U8oL0DjfpmDeY55rEo_OqNHqeh5wf6XkiFxZJ7vIgWvU22u0UkjG-T3vzWx1k3Ns8z6-nXoG8aT1DPQkXaEaRBNY-2CM8mv06BjF6tqBMzRq9q_vmu__sQJzdukFSaM/s640/IMG_0596.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As you can see, I'm painting my walls light blue. (They're actually finished now.) I figure it's a nice calm color. But I have no idea where to go from here. I did make some things to hang on the walls...</div>
<div>

<div>
Have I mentioned lately how much I love math workshop? I'm sitting here looking through my math games and centers and thinking how different teaching math used to be. Math games were relegated to the little bits of free time I could carve out of our day. But when you follow a workshop model, the kids gets plenty of hands-on practice using games and activities. Plus, you get the benefit of working with your students in small groups. There's really no better way to teach math. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So today, I am really excited to share with you an awesome free e-book full of tips, ideas, and resources for starting math workshop in your classroom! I was invited to collaborate on this project by Literacy Loves Company and I think it turned out great.</div>

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0; URL='http://www.fishyrobb.com/single-post/Guided-Math-101'" />
<!--StartFragment-->
</head>
Guided small-group reading has been around for a looong time. In fact, in most districts, it's a required part of the literacy block. And for good reason... Guided reading provides differentiation for students and lets the teacher keep close tabs on where each child is as a reader. It's become a best practice in the world of education. What I can't figure out is why guided math hasn't found the same level of discipleship.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Once a child learns letters and sounds and basic phonics skills, reading becomes more of a practice in a specific set of comprehension skills - word meaning, main idea, author's purpose, inferencing, cause and effect, and so forth. There's not much new in reading from third grade on except for text complexity. My third graders are learning about character traits in folktales right now while my high school daughter has been discussing character traits in Shakespeare. If I don't quite get main idea this year, I'll get it again next year and again and again and again.<br />
<br />
Math is different. Math continues to build and change from year to year. Math in third grade looks NOTHING like math in high school. In fact, I cannot even begin to decipher one of my daughter's trigonometry problems. (It looks like gibberish to me - a third grade math teacher).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNQbIoR1y7YNUh7iIPvsM_8yCZYQ3vTvdby5GmiztZyq43OIGCKhrr1Lnsl8iokooMECPVOOwuloXEHVbMlrop-a2Tcr0LzQ_BSB3xlWZqFohIcld_ZB3GKeNBe6ZPtr5l8JG_0PSCnlc/s1600/Untitled.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNQbIoR1y7YNUh7iIPvsM_8yCZYQ3vTvdby5GmiztZyq43OIGCKhrr1Lnsl8iokooMECPVOOwuloXEHVbMlrop-a2Tcr0LzQ_BSB3xlWZqFohIcld_ZB3GKeNBe6ZPtr5l8JG_0PSCnlc/s400/Untitled.png" width="398" /></a></div>
In math, if I miss something essential early on, I may find myself falling farther and father behind because that skill likely won't be explicitly taught again next year. Actually, it may never be taught again.<br />
<br />
So why, when teaching essential math skills that can make or break future mathematical success, shouldn't we embrace guided instruction?<br />
<br />
Yeah, I know... we teachers have enough on our plates. But planning for guided math isn't all that hard. You just need 3 things: a spot to meet with your groups, a rotation schedule, and some math centers. Let's talk about each of these...<br />
<br />
1. <b>A Spot to Meet</b> - I would guess that the majority of teachers use their "reading table" to meet with small groups. Why can't it also be a "math table"? I don't even use a table at all. I meet with students on the rug in front of my big whiteboard easel. This gives us a place to spread out with manipulatives, math journals, individual whiteboards, or whatever else we need. I LOVE my whiteboard easel because I can use it to model strategies and the kids can use it to share their work. It looks like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0EViD5NRwd8vJj3FxWYk0S9dVcl26zgxlC1otXkOzT5QXQnGQP5GTtVWES1jYGufEI2FmcxOTl7rabH2UEToE9D2Qxi7UVQk2Vsic0VAjWmUwm2vYDH769CcO-sgeivL1T7B4fejwtmY/s1600/3.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: left;"><img border="0" height="173" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0EViD5NRwd8vJj3FxWYk0S9dVcl26zgxlC1otXkOzT5QXQnGQP5GTtVWES1jYGufEI2FmcxOTl7rabH2UEToE9D2Qxi7UVQk2Vsic0VAjWmUwm2vYDH769CcO-sgeivL1T7B4fejwtmY/s400/3.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<a href="http://amzn.to/1Qyj59q" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik-HoJTAcI171hJFqus6l32H_BTnoC2zwj50xkr_g0XpCzYeg3hh3C7V4h5q70Q9Nw2_Vs7vID_IAeTq0Es-0p_CJx9o1R3XVuuI-KWa8eUeqA25zfZxw2lw6DS-5dUqPeiilyzRik3pc/s200/31F9LCuNy0L.jpg" width="200" /></a><br />
Notice how the picture of my classroom shows the easel close to the ground? Yeah, that's right, my easel can be raised and lowered! Did I tell you that I love it? I use it every, single day, usually multiple times. Best $70 I ever spent (yay <a href="http://amzn.to/1Qyj59q" target="_blank">Amazon</a>!)<br />
<br />
2. <b>A Rotation Schedule</b> - This is actually the trickiest part of guided math groups. But it's no different than scheduling your reading groups. I can't tell you exactly how to do it because each class is unique. It will depend mainly on the number of students and how much time you have each day. However, one thing that should be the same across all classrooms: your groups should be fluid and based on your formative assessments and observations and you should meet with your low groups as much as possible. (Don't forget your high ones though! They need enrichment and can be pushed further than the curriculum goes.)<br />
<br />
3. <b>Math Centers</b> - These won't look the same for everyone. Your grade level, standards, and student abilities will dictate your centers. One thing to remember though: Keep it simple! Math centers can quickly get out of hand if you give too many choices or constantly change them. I like to use the same 4 every week:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Technology (math websites and apps) - Scootpad, Frontrow, IXL, are all good choices if you don't know where to start.</li>
<li>Partner Work</li>
<li>Games</li>
<li>Task Cards</li>
</ul>
<div>
I also count "Meet With Teacher" as a rotation. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Guided math takes a little bit of time to set up, just like reading groups do, but it's well worth it! Once I implemented it in my classroom, I saw a dramatic change in the amount of math learning that was happening and a positive change in the "mathitude" of my students. </div>
<div>

If you do guided math in your classroom, please leave a comment below with your best tip. I can always use some new ones! Here's my #1 tip: Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a piece of shower board cut into small rectangles (12x15 works well). They make perfect individual whiteboards that can be used during your math groups. Students will also use them at centers to work out problems. They are invaluable! For erasers, just cut up an old towel or use old socks. </div>

</head>
Hi teacher friends! This week in third grade land we are learning to divide. I recently noticed that my kids are having a hard time interpreting certain phrases in word problems. Things like "rows of 3" were really tripping them up. While they all understand what "3 rows" looks like, they can't seem to make sense of "rows of 3". Not the end of the world, but I really want them to understand word problems no matter how they're written.<br />
<br />
Today I got out some math block (little unit cubes actually) and had them build a model to represent some of these tricky phrases. Then they drew their model and wrote the corresponding multiplication and division equations. What I thought might be a quick activity that they might rush through turned out to be really challenging.<br />
<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFymc3CNTHWJ5gIMuA0IRjTngWeiVnXs4PFX7d_2ehMMz9OzSAAD12CY1NliiCYA_7W8d2aTBwbzG6VpNTX-vjKrV9oNyy051k991QXvwLXnWx_trVsf-6mz42_AVIwZ7_dLZesTwvl_E/s1600/IMG_0440.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="459" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFymc3CNTHWJ5gIMuA0IRjTngWeiVnXs4PFX7d_2ehMMz9OzSAAD12CY1NliiCYA_7W8d2aTBwbzG6VpNTX-vjKrV9oNyy051k991QXvwLXnWx_trVsf-6mz42_AVIwZ7_dLZesTwvl_E/s640/IMG_0440.JPG" title="division worksheet" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
What I found was that a lot of the kids were mixing up rows and columns, or making arrays when it called for equal groups. This activity let me address those quickly and easily just by moving around the room and observing the kids working.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
However, the biggest issue that I saw was a few students who would multiply no matter what. If the task said "14 blocks arranged in groups of 2", they would write 14 x 2 = 28. So, while everyone else was working, I called a small group to my table. Most of them were able to see their mistake once I worked through it with them and the rest of the activity went smoothly. A couple still weren't getting it and I know that's where I need to focus my attention right now. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It wasn't rocket science, but this activity really let me see the kids' thinking. If you would like a copy of the worksheet I made for this, you can get it by clicking on the picture below:</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Enjoy! I'd love to hear how it works for your class!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hi teacher friends! I'm really excited to be joining in on the You Oughta Know blog hop once again. You'll be glad you stopped by for this one!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know you've had your own experiences with that one kid... the one who has so many issues that you don't know where to start, the one who disrupts your class every single day, the one that you've tried EVERYTHING with. Daily notes, calling parents, behavior contracts... nothing works. It's so frustrating!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you understand just what I'm talking about, then you oughta know about PBIS World. This is a super awesome (and free) website for teachers that's like your own personal behavior specialist. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When you arrive at the site, you are presented with a list of problems. To get started, just click on the one you really want to address first...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin6ee3_nLZKKgrXMfNSBHcN3AFA9UbFrwWsiTjYYOs6Uz5iVxjNLP5wI8ccch_7ySWNVrolaOFIfuT_LOVu2MFhETeb3MD93QwOmwNAyPX5HQUKY_PuAxtGNPYE2G3hd-hS1Dxy7uEnRk/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-10-16+at+6.38.13+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin6ee3_nLZKKgrXMfNSBHcN3AFA9UbFrwWsiTjYYOs6Uz5iVxjNLP5wI8ccch_7ySWNVrolaOFIfuT_LOVu2MFhETeb3MD93QwOmwNAyPX5HQUKY_PuAxtGNPYE2G3hd-hS1Dxy7uEnRk/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-10-16+at+6.38.13+PM.png" title="behavior interventions" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here I've clicked on "Disrespectful" because well, I hate disrespectful and would like to nip that in the bud first. After you make your selection, the site gives you a list of behaviors that you may be observing. This is to make sure you've correctly identified the root problem. If the list looks accurate, go ahead and click YES at the bottom....</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJblXs01b9ceIOlUfE4fWEzreZMQMb1ujNHbyy-t-_JZXNdEtdqIk_ipJ2Vkzfz_ZmBhgIupYuqUbcfZ8h5uoEJ5_ODDuKmNUh3riI6ELIm0HbbFzhfSw3LgLL9eqL9EDRG4KzNST8lGY/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-10-16+at+6.39.55+PM.png" imageanchor="1"><img alt="" border="0" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJblXs01b9ceIOlUfE4fWEzreZMQMb1ujNHbyy-t-_JZXNdEtdqIk_ipJ2Vkzfz_ZmBhgIupYuqUbcfZ8h5uoEJ5_ODDuKmNUh3riI6ELIm0HbbFzhfSw3LgLL9eqL9EDRG4KzNST8lGY/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-10-16+at+6.39.55+PM.png" title="classroom behavior" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
After you've selected the problem, the site gives you a list of tier 1 interventions to try for that particular behavior issue. Now you might be thinking, "Hey, I'm already doing all of this." Maybe, but really look closely and make sure you aren't missing something. For this one, I see that one intervention is to speak with the student in the hallway. I'm wondering why that's important, so I click on it...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinFRgX_ctkxz34-BrUul8wuXLFzlQcSj6mhLgq2wBFsREQ2swRh_-GawbLCOa_IbUW8L9U0y3Gl_K8ey0dPUrGQRwQfAsPw6iPlVV_4Fbi_f2CZYgF5uvGPkktYZ0M6jlHr8SFoA5xzd0/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-10-16+at+6.40.55+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinFRgX_ctkxz34-BrUul8wuXLFzlQcSj6mhLgq2wBFsREQ2swRh_-GawbLCOa_IbUW8L9U0y3Gl_K8ey0dPUrGQRwQfAsPw6iPlVV_4Fbi_f2CZYgF5uvGPkktYZ0M6jlHr8SFoA5xzd0/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-10-16+at+6.40.55+PM.png" width="390" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is where the site becomes really helpful. Now you can see the nitty gritty of that specific intervention... why you should do it, when you should do it, and exactly how you should do it so that it will actually work for the student...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCUyeWtXhcj5lqX6HLVLeeomaca6lhfTCDzDHDSPu42iUxFBx7TXkPe-a0TIVFy_L-okyIglATvTz7yBuCen_7-ywh4EmzAVPbMUeWcFeeWig7x8_YrnN_JShyjFzzd8jfVrvwe5Dt8j4/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-10-16+at+7.07.44+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCUyeWtXhcj5lqX6HLVLeeomaca6lhfTCDzDHDSPu42iUxFBx7TXkPe-a0TIVFy_L-okyIglATvTz7yBuCen_7-ywh4EmzAVPbMUeWcFeeWig7x8_YrnN_JShyjFzzd8jfVrvwe5Dt8j4/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-10-16+at+7.07.44+PM.png" width="245" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is so important. If you do the intervention the wrong way, you might as well not do anything at all. You have to implement it correctly and consistently and this page really helps you do that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So after you look at the details, you can go back to the tier 1 page. At the bottom of the page, you have a few options. If you click on "See all tier 1 interventions", you'll just get a list of every intervention under the sun. I don't really suggest this one because you need specific interventions for the problem. However, you should most definitely check out the data tracking forms and strategies...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZc0Ad3XYxh-UDk-AYqaQ11AP25vi0KWR3Mp3Uc8ile3Fyrpb7jL7amLPj6DlRjZDFIaSYd6hUG_qWwSoic2EDqLmzvpnru4L7JxqBpobRTQsMdu06ofV8pAgzWxq2aX8sRXv1uiv9MM/s1600/1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="171" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhZc0Ad3XYxh-UDk-AYqaQ11AP25vi0KWR3Mp3Uc8ile3Fyrpb7jL7amLPj6DlRjZDFIaSYd6hUG_qWwSoic2EDqLmzvpnru4L7JxqBpobRTQsMdu06ofV8pAgzWxq2aX8sRXv1uiv9MM/s640/1.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This page will give you all of the forms you could need from daily behavior notes to self-tracking sheets to parent questionnaires. They are divided into tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 sections to help you find what you need depending on what stage of intervention you're working in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
PBIS World really is your one-stop shop for behavior interventions. The best part is that it helps you zero in on the issue and then provides all of the tools you need for documentation. Your guidance counselor or school psychologist will love you!</div>

Hi teacher friends! This has been a busy month! I just want to share a few of the anchor charts we've been making in math. The kids help decide what to include and I do the writing. We're working on multiplication right now...<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0ryf1Mj72k1cdmN4P2f7Kz_QiAJWg6pWYeJE84FlTWeyHmJqQJJOsmdWombdfB9L5LgIa3JP4HANKip3hUE9qBcRi43nUdLrne6RgL15s4jrCIpXItAIMZAYURZcVO4KbrvregnhN2iY/s1600/c.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0ryf1Mj72k1cdmN4P2f7Kz_QiAJWg6pWYeJE84FlTWeyHmJqQJJOsmdWombdfB9L5LgIa3JP4HANKip3hUE9qBcRi43nUdLrne6RgL15s4jrCIpXItAIMZAYURZcVO4KbrvregnhN2iY/s320/c.png" title="properties of multiplication anchor chart" width="267" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOi150PIfPc8uUokaz6He49SQYkXBqzPScH4izyuVAO2oR0gcjJ3odcT31uy4EHYJDeosmzPaRP5pvGOm21uuNiU-tk09iriNHGa6klWIy9xagGTL6BvyOFyabHfNyK3i1mGBXdPXaYSI/s1600/d.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOi150PIfPc8uUokaz6He49SQYkXBqzPScH4izyuVAO2oR0gcjJ3odcT31uy4EHYJDeosmzPaRP5pvGOm21uuNiU-tk09iriNHGa6klWIy9xagGTL6BvyOFyabHfNyK3i1mGBXdPXaYSI/s320/d.png" title="multiplication anchor chart" width="309" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After we make the big chart together, they copy it down in their math journals. They've been going a great job and really enjoy referring back to their journals when needed. Once they realized that I will occasionally let them use their journals during quizzes, their handwriting suddenly got a lot neater!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's another chart we made for rounding...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They aren't the fancy, perfect charts you see on Pinterest, but they're effective. I keep them hanging on one wall and the students can go back and look at them any time. The important thing is that they contributed to the content.</div>

That's not because they aren't smart enough or developmentally ready. It's because in making the jump to the standard algorithm, they are missing a crucial step... converting between place values.<img src="IMAGEURL" style="display: none;" /><br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I bet many of your students are weak in this skill too. Just last week, I had to take a detour from my planned math lessons and revisit something they should have learned in second grade - how many tens are in a 3-digit number. It was a simple question, or so I thought...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b>"What is the total number of tens in the number 238?"</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All of their hands shot up in the air and all of them thought the answer was 3.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><b>"No, I don't want to know what number is in the tens place. If we were going to build the number 138 and we only had tens rods and ones blocks, how many tens would we need?"</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
They stared at me like I was speaking in tongues. No one had an understanding that 2 hundreds is the same as 20 tens. So I got out the math blocks. We counted by tens. We figured it out. We practiced with pictures of math blocks, We did it forwards and backwards. They were ready, right?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, I wrote a problem on the white board... </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-size: large;"><b>238 - 57</b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I asked them how we could solve this problem. Note that I did not ask them to find the answer. I wanted to know how they would tackle the problem itself. Not one of them could verbalize the idea that you would need to move one of the hundreds from the hundreds place and convert it into tens in order to subtract the 50. Nor did anyone see that there were 23 tens from which you could subtract 5 tens. I got all kinds of things like...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b><span style="color: #3d85c6;">"Cross off the two and cross off the three and put a one above it and then you have thirteen which is bigger than five." </span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I prodded them to explain their ideas and again, they just stared at me. Clearly they had been shown the algorithm either by a parent or a teacher, but they had no understanding of what the procedure meant or why they were doing it.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm sure my class isn't the only group of 8-year olds who get stuck when it comes to understanding what regrouping means. That's where expanded form comes in. When you break a problem down into expanded form before subtracting, it all becomes very clear. This is what it looks like...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvj6O-Jn__wp3lvQy63MA8c9q1NtgmhfU3ahYGfRnNWvu_q_Xeg6xgZK5RaGBwEV-2fq8uCE9WXL9t9TXd7zy43nxesMHQJhjnZg6Gwsphvk0kylEPZiqRLyv91_d5yJgpnzN96QkSt_E/s1600/regroup.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvj6O-Jn__wp3lvQy63MA8c9q1NtgmhfU3ahYGfRnNWvu_q_Xeg6xgZK5RaGBwEV-2fq8uCE9WXL9t9TXd7zy43nxesMHQJhjnZg6Gwsphvk0kylEPZiqRLyv91_d5yJgpnzN96QkSt_E/s400/regroup.png" title="regrouping" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now students are forced to see the value of each digit and therefore, understand what is being moved from one column to the next. It's the logical step between concrete and abstract and it's missing from a lot of math instruction. If your kids don't have a solid understanding of regrouping and why they are doing it, try using the expanded form model before the standard algorithm. I think you'll find that it really helps!</div>

The classrooms at my school underwent some major renovations over the summer... new walls, new ceilings, and new workrooms. Instead of getting in a week early to set up, we had to wait for final inspection just three days before the kids showed up. Here is what my room looked like when I arrived for pre-planning...<img src="IMAGEURL" style="display: none;" /><br />

I'm pretty happy with how it looks considering I threw it together in three days! I switched from desks to tables this year. We'll see how that goes. I thought it would be better for labs, group work, and sharing manipulatives. I've got a class full of TALKERS though.... sigh.</div>

<li><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Plan dinners for the first week back at school.</span> - Okay, so that's kind of obvious, I know. But here's the real tip... Come up with five easy meals (Sunday through Thursday) that will also be great for leftovers the next day. Then you also have lunch for the entire first week! Getting up early for school is traumatic enough after a summer's worth of sleeping in. Having to make lunch too just adds to the pain. One of my favorite leftover meals is King Ranch Chicken. It's probably not the healthiest thing in the world but it is EASY and delicious (plus my kids like it and it's cheap.... BONUS). Here's the recipe I use: <a href="http://www.ro-tel.com/recipes-King-Ranch-Chicken-3541.html" target="_blank">King Ranch Chicken</a>. To make it even faster and easier, I cheat and buy a rotisserie chicken from the deli (shh...don't tell anyone).</li>
<br />
<li><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Put together your school "emergency kit".</span> - What? Like for fire drills? No, that's not what I'm talking about. I keep a small tote bag in my closet full of little things I might need: aspirin, safety pins, deodorant (yeah, it's HOT down here in Florida!), mascara, mouthwash (for those really long days like Open House night), an extra house key, extra sunglasses, Tide-To-Go stain remover, and the all-important emergency chocolate bar. I usually have a pair of flip-flops in there too for when my shoes start to hurt or when I stay after school for awhile.</li>
<br />
<li><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Take a trip to Walmart.</span> - Okay, I'm the first to <strike>admit</strike> announce that I hate Walmart. I seriously detest the place. In fact, I will happily pay 20% more just to shop somewhere else. However, there is one time I will venture into the depths of Hell-mart... back to school time. Here's why: When the kids bring in 80 packs of those super cheap pencils or several dozen paper pocket folders without prongs, Walmart will let you exchange them without a receipt (as long as they aren't Office Depot brand or something). Now, if you're anything like me, you will end up with an entire shopping cart full of unwanted supplies. So, I strongly suggest that you either call ahead or better yet, go in and talk to the manager while wearing your school badge in a prominent spot. Explain the dilemma of receiving so many unwanted supplies and how it would be so beneficial to your students to be able to exchange them for things they actually need. I've never been turned down.</li>
<br />
<li><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Use your phone in class.</span> - No, do not text your husband ten times to say how you wish summer had been just a month or two longer. You know how easy it is to get off schedule the first few days of school? How many times have you been deep in discussion about reporting vs. tattling only to discover that special area started 10 minutes ago? It happens! So before the first day of school, set your phone to alert you to those transition times.</li>
<br />
<li><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Create new student bags.</span> - One of the most disruptive things to an otherwise smooth school day is a new student coming in. Not that I don't like new students, but if I'm not prepared, my day goes completely off track. A good way to keep things rolling is to prepare a bunch of "new student bags". These include all of the essentials that I normally give students during the first couple days of school: homework folder, supply list, parent letter, student info sheet, folders for reading and math, desk tag, etc. When the new student arrives, I pull out a bag and everything is there. What a lifesaver!</li>
